'Toyota’s safety tests do not meet UN norms'

latest-news By BBN Bureau June 12, 2024

TOKYO: Japan’s transport ministry has revealed that Toyota Motor Corp has committed six instances of misconduct related to vehicle certification, potentially violating both domestic standards and UN vehicle regulations, Japanese media has reported.

These UN regulations, adopted by 62 countries and regions including Japan, South Korea, and Europe, set international safety and environmental standards. Since Japan’s domestic vehicle regulations align with those of the United Nations, these irregularities could prevent manufacturers from mass-producing the affected vehicles in Europe and other regions.

This announcement comes one week after the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry disclosed that five vehicle manufacturers were involved in certification misconduct, a crucial requirement for the mass production of automobiles and motorcycles. The ministry will review the results of on-site inspections at each company and consider administrative actions based on the Road Transport Vehicle Law.
